Rockhampton Ring Road delivery to transform Central Queensland transport

football field

Construction of the $1.73 billion Rockhampton Ring Road is progressing in Central Queensland, thanks to a boost in joint funding from the Queensland and Australian governments. The 17.4km road project, which incorporates 18 bridges, will increase connections to key urban precincts, improve access and road safety, and reduce travel times to critical services, including hospitals and emergency services. When complete, large trucks can avoid 19 sets of traffic lights through Rockhampton, which has long been regarded as the pinch point for transport and travel on the Bruce Highway.

The project provides employment and training for people in Central Queensland, creating an extended pipeline of road construction for apprentices and trainees, engineers and technical workers. Industry and businesses have an opportunity to build capability and capacity that will provide long-term economic benefits to the region. The first $280 million package of works started in November 2023, with 85 per cent of the total contract value awarded to local businesses. The Queensland Government is providing $530 million for the Rockhampton Ring Road, and the Australian Government has committed $1.2 billion.
